Soapbox:
The start of the contest has coincided with improving conditions, though mainly still for 1-and 2-hop Es QSOs on 6m and 4m.

GM8IEM – IO78HF
Slow start this year – all contacts have been made using my 10m vert up until now.
Beam has been problematic after a tower cable snapped and shocked the lot last year. snapped the 6m reflector, and as the Balun was single core inner on the coax, it had cracked too and was showing an intermittent Open Circuit. I think we have finally got there today, still a bit of fine tuning required but got the dual band beam back aloft albeit a tad lower than usual.

Wow! What an opening to North America today (10th June) on 6m – a constant stream on ft8 from “Nine ’til Five”, quite literally !!
90 Q’s in the log and best DX for today was K0GU in Colorado, with XE2X in Texas (Mexico) and N5IF in Texas (USA) closely behind.

I’ve only been on 6m for a few months, most of which were 100% dead, so this Es activity is a revelation for me. I have decades of experience of not working much on 2m of course, but on 6m I just do not know what to expect, though obviously it is easier/better on 6m. This leads to many questions in my mind regarding whether or not my set-up is at fault or its just the RF Gods (as usual). Obviously I hope it’s the latter!
I have plenty of power but antenna is five of the 6 elements of an old KSC OWA (D4 is missing) which is not very high – maybe 20 feet up but with good take off. I also do not know whether this year (so far) is normal, above average or exceptional.
But it has been great fun so far!!
